Broad Question
How long will it take for different types of candy to melt?
Specific Question
What type of candy will melt the fastest?
Hypothesis
It is hypothesized that tootsie rolls will melt the fastest and the Cinnamon Hard Candy will take the longest.

Variables
Independent Variable: Different types of candy.
Dependent Variable: How long it takes for the candy to melt.
Variables That Need To Be Controlled:Hotplate, Beakers, Same amount of water, same amount of candy, and same type of candy.
Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation
Hotplate-A plate that you plug into a wall socket to take electric energy and convert into heat. Beakers-A glass that holds water or other substances and gives the amount that is in it.
General Plan
We are going to melt candy and see which one melts the fastest. We are going to buy Starbursts,Cinnamon Hard Candy, Tootsie Rolls. We are going to put the different types of candy on pots on the same heat with every type of candy. We are going to use a stopwatch and time the time it takes to melt the candy. We are going to run our experiment between the dates of March 4th and March 21st. We are going to do the experiment at JBES.We want to do this because we want to see how long it takes for candy to melt.
Potential Problems And Solutions
People being absent, not getting the candy, time running out, getting the candy out, and getting the same amount of candy. One person had to run the experiment, Getting extra candies from teachers in the school, Having teachers watch it until it is done, Take popsicle sticks to scrape it out and soaking it in water, And measuring the candy to 15 grams each time on a scale.
Safety Or Environmental Concerns
Have goggles and aprons on when the experiment, Use rubber gloves to get the beaker off the hotplate, and use tongs to put the put the smaller beaker into the beaker with the boiling water.
Experimental Design
Number Of Trials:
The number of trials is 3 for each different types of candy.
Number Of Subjects In Each trial:
The number of each subject in a trial is 3.
When data will be collected
All the data will all collected at the end of each trial.
Number of Observations:
We observed that hard candy takes longer then any other candy to melt.
Where will data be collected?
The data will be collected on the Google docs spreadsheet.
Gather Materials (see materials list) in science room at JBES.
Put 150 ml of tap water into the 600 ml glass beaker and place it on the cool (room temperature) hot plate.
Turn on hot plate.
Measure out 15 grams of candy.
Wait until the water boils.
Put the 250ml beaker into the 600ml beaker.
At that same moment start the stopwatch.
Wait until the candy is melted.
Clean out beaker.
Repeat process for different candies.

Results
Three types of candy were tested to determine which type melted faster. After three trials the tootsie roll melted the fastest with starburst the second fastest and cinnamon hard candy the longest. For each candy, 150 ml of water was put into a 600 ml beaker on a hotplate. When the water began to boil the measured candy was put into the 250 ml beaker and submersed into the boiling water each one of the three timers were started. Each different candy was pre-measured to 15 grams. The mean melting point of the hard candy was 32:15 minutes, the starburst was 15:35 and the Tootsie Roll was 15:24. The trial that has the highest outcomes was the second trial with times of Hard Candies 32:20, Starburst 20:13 and Tootsie Roll 19:29

Data Analysis
According to our data the Tootsie Roll melted the fasted. Then the Starburst melted soon after that. The Cinnamon hard candy melted the longest every time.
Discussion
The question was what candy would melt the fastest. The candy that melts the fastest is Tootsie Roll. The evidence that was found to support the answer was a spreadsheet it shows the time to melt the candy. The hypothesis was not supported by the results because we said the Starburst would melt the fastest but it was Tootsie Roll. The patterns or trends that can be identified within the data and observations were the Tootsie Roll melted first and the Cinnamon Hard Candy was last to melt every time. The was a strong connection between the how long it takes to melt and type of candy. The problem was when we put the candy in the boiling water and how to clean up the mess. The harder the candy the longer it took to melt. When we did the first trial we didn’t know when to put the beaker in another beaker. The technology we used was a hot plate, tongs, candy, hot pads, timers and beakers to melt the candy also water. The knowledge gained by the experiment is the harder stuff takes long to melt. .
Benefit to Community and/or Science
Knowing what type of candy such as hard or soft melts the fastest. This could help people make new candies by melting these candies and pouring it into a mould.
Abstract
The experiment ended with the results that agreed with the hypothesis. The experiment was designed to test the melting point of three different candy types. Cinnamon Hard Candy, Starburst, and Tootsie Rolls were tested. The candy was melted in a double boiler made out of beakers, Two beakers were taken and put one in another. One of them is 600ml and the other is 250ml. 150ml of water was added to the 600ml beaker, The 600ml was placed on a hotplate. Add the 250ml beaker with 15 grams of candy in it to the 600ml beaker after the water is at a complete boil. Start the stopwatch at that moment, then take the melted candy and dump it out, then clean out the beakers. The Tootsie Roll melted the fastest with an average time of 14.96 minutes. The Starburst was the second fastest with an average time of 15.37. The cinnamon Hard candy came in last with an average time of 32.18.
